History of the House of Swaine

The House of Swaine was an established saddle maker in 1750 under the name Swaine Adeney Leather.

Swaine began as makers of driving, riding and hunting whips, becoming whip-makers to the royal family. With the coming of railways, demand for whips shifted away from driving accessories to hunting and fashionable riding accessories.

As the twentieth century dawned, Swaine survived the onset of motor cars by applying leatherworking skills to the making of luggage for vehicles.

In 1943 Brigg Umbrellas was acquired, forming Swaine, Adeney, Brigg & Sons Ltd. In 1996 the brand acquired Herbert Johnson, forming the present-day trio of high-end brands. Herbert Johnson was known as one of the oldest surviving hatters, Brigg Umbrellas were London’s leading umbrella and walking stick manufacturers. Brigg themselves has their own long and impressive history of craftsmanship and royal patronage.
